Every certificate gives the same strong encryption. They differ in how much of your identity is verified — and therefore how much trust visitors place in your site.
Domain Validation (DV)
Proves you control the domain and issues within minutes. The fastest, most affordable route to HTTPS — ideal for blogs, portfolios and small sites. Products: EssentialSSL, Positive SSL.
Organization Validation (OV)

An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your visitors and your website, so passwords, card details and form submissions can’t be read in transit. It also switches your site to HTTPS and shows the padlock in the address bar. Without one, Chrome, Safari and Edge label your site “Not secure”, which scares away visitors and hurts conversions — so in practice every website needs one today.
DV (Domain Validation) only proves you control the domain and is issued within minutes — this covers EssentialSSL and Positive SSL. OV (Organization Validation) additionally verifies that your registered company exists, and puts your organisation’s name inside the certificate — this is InstantSSL and InstantSSL Pro. EV (Extended Validation) is the strictest check, requiring legal, physical and operational verification of your business, for the highest level of visitor assurance. All three give the same strong encryption; they differ in how much identity is verified.
For a blog, portfolio, landing page or small brochure site, a DV certificate (EssentialSSL or Positive SSL) is the fastest and most cost-effective choice. For a business site that collects customer information, logins or online payments, choose an OV certificate (InstantSSL or InstantSSL Pro) so visitors can see a verified company name behind the site. For banks, large e-commerce, government or regulated industries where trust is critical, choose an EV certificate. If you are unsure, start with DV — you can always upgrade later.

Just as important, browsers now flag plain HTTP pages as “Not secure”, which raises bounce rate and lowers the trust and engagement signals search engines watch. HTTPS is also required to use HTTP/2 and modern performance features, so it indirectly improves page speed — another ranking factor. Installing SSL is one of the simplest technical-SEO wins available.
A free DV certificate provides the same encryption strength and is fine for personal or low-risk sites. You pay for a certificate when you need something free options don’t offer: verified organisation identity (OV/EV), a warranty that protects your visitors against mis-issuance, longer validity with fewer renewals, wildcard or multi-domain coverage on one certificate, and priority support. Businesses handling payments or sensitive data generally choose a paid OV or EV certificate for the added trust.
It depends on the validation level. DV certificates are usually issued within a few minutes once you confirm domain control. OV certificates take a few hours up to a couple of business days while the certificate authority verifies your organisation. EV certificates take longer — typically several business days — because of the deeper legal and operational checks. Ordering the right documents early speeds OV and EV up.
To issue a certificate, the certificate authority must confirm you control the domain (Domain Control Validation). The simplest method is email: it sends an approval link to a pre-approved address on your domain such as admin@, administrator@, webmaster@, hostmaster@ or postmaster@yourdomain. You pick this approver email at checkout. Control can also be proven by adding a DNS record or uploading a small file to your website if you prefer not to use email.
The warranty is a guarantee from the certificate authority (Sectigo) that protects the relying parties — your visitors — against financial loss if the certificate is ever mis-issued due to a CA error. It is not insurance for your own business, but a higher warranty signals a more rigorously backed product. Higher-tier certificates such as InstantSSL Pro and EV carry larger warranty amounts than entry-level DV certificates.
These are not for securing websites. A Code Signing certificate digitally signs software and applications so users don’t see “unknown publisher” warnings and can trust the file hasn’t been tampered with — buy it only if you distribute software. An Email (S/MIME) certificate digitally signs and encrypts email to prove the sender and keep messages private — useful for organisations that exchange sensitive information. If you only run a website, a standard, wildcard or multi-domain SSL is what you need.
